Should Indonesia Import Fruits?

Nowadays, we can find in the market many big sizes, colorful, and fresh fruit which make us want to buy it. Have you ever though where it comes from? Do the fruit is local fruits ore import ones? Most of the fruits that we buy are import fruit. Why can it be? The distribution of import fruits is very large in our country, so how about local fruits? Where we can find it? Today it is very difficult to find local fruits especially in the big city. The sellers like to sell the import fruits rather than local fruits why can it be? There are some advantages and disadvantages about import fruit.

Based on the seller side, selling import fruits give them a lot of benefit rather than local fruit. Import fruits have good quality. It has many variants that give the consumer many choices. Import fruits are fresher, more colorful, and have bigger size than local fruit. It is because the importer fruits have sophisticated technology to make their fruit better than local fruit. By selling import fruits, the sellers also can meet a demand of the consumers. The secretary-general of Aprindo, Satria Hamid said that they took import fruit from foreign country because of the consumers’ request. They choose import fruits because it has good quality, so the consumer satisfied with it. The market also can prepare fruits that local fruits do not harvest yet. It makes the consumer easier to get the fruits that they want without waiting until harvest fruits.

For economical reason, the prices of import fruits are cheaper than local fruits. Even it is import fruit, it does not mean that it has expensive price than local fruit. For local fruit, the farmers still use traditional ways to cultivate their production. Farmers should buy the manure and the tools which cause the cost of the production will increase. When the cost of production is high, the price of the local fruits should be high in order to get profit. For example, chili’s farmers in Karo Roni Jaya Bukit SP district explained that it is difficult to get chilies with good quality because of the financial capital that very expensive and also wages of the worker. Henry-potatoes’ farmer- said,” Financial capital for one tree of the potato take out Rp. 2000 including the seed, the manure and the employees. It exactly different with import fruit that use sophisticated technology in cultivate the fruits. The importer country can create the manure that can produce fruits that have good quality as much as possible that can decrease the production cost. In this time the deficit of the import fruits and vegetables are around Rp. 18 quintillion/year, so there is so much profit that foreign farmers get than local farmers.

On the other hand, import fruit also have some disadvantages. We have to know how the importer keeps their import fruits always fresh. The producers use chemical products to keep the quality of their fruits like formalin It is impossible to keep fruit still fresh, because it takes a long time to distribute the fruits to another country. Edi Susanto-the manager of fruits shop “Total Buah Segar” said that import fruits in Indonesia contain formalin to keep the fruits still fresh. Actually import fruits that contain the substance are fruits from USA ( America Serikat) and China. The fruits are apple, grape, orange and pear. Last years KTNA ( Kontak Tani Nelayan andalan ) in Jombang, West Java refused 1000 ton of import fruits that contain formalin and coloring substances. It is not good for our health if we consume it in the long time. The fruit that contain chemical substances can cause cancer even we wash the fruits before we eat it, because the substances still adhere in that fruits.

Besides that, import fruit also can decrease the production of local fruit. If the margin of local fruits is low, it cause the farmers will bankrupt, so the percentage of the unemployed will increase. The consumer request of fruits in Indonesia is very high. It is about 18,5 million ton/year. Actually the local fruits also increasing 12-15 % in this 5 years. Sri Kuntarsih-the director of PDB said that local fruits are increasing in 2005-2010 about 63,5 %. However, Indonesia has many places that very convenient and prosperous to plant many fruit. Indonesia is agrarian country that most of the society works as farmer. The climate of Indonesia is tropical. In tropical climate with the land that very prosperous, Indonesia can produce fruits that more delicious than import fruits.

The government should do act about import fruits in Indonesia. It needs to do some massive and systematic strategies to resolve this problem. In my opinion, the government should limit the import fruits in Indonesia, because Indonesia has the place, the good seed, and very skillful farmer that can produce good fruit. If we can increase the production of our fruit it will affect in our economical. If we can fulfill the consumer request of the fruits, we can stop the import fruit and save the calculation of our financial, and it will become profit for Indonesia if we can export our fruit. The consumers also must be aware to love Indonesian product.  If we can do that, it will affect in the stabilization of economy in Indonesia.
